What it means
A hallucination is when an AI model produces text that sounds plausible but is not grounded in real information. The model is not lying intentionally. It is doing what it always does - predicting likely-sounding words - but in this case the prediction does not match reality.
Examples include made-up statistics, fabricated quotes, invented business features, wrong pricing, or invented references to nonexistent studies.
Why it matters
When an AI engine hallucinates about your business, the user sees confident-sounding misinformation attributed to you. They might form a wrong impression of your services, your pricing, or your specialties. Worse, the misinformation can spread as users share AI-generated content.
Hallucination risk is highest for under-represented brands. The less an AI engine knows about you, the more it makes things up to fill gaps.
How it's used (and how to fight it)
To reduce hallucinations about your business:
- Build authoritative content - the more accurate, structured information about your business exists online, the less the AI has to guess
- Use schema markup - explicit, structured facts give AI engines something concrete to extract
- Track citation accuracy - run prompt panels monthly and audit what AI says about you
- Correct sources - if a Wikipedia entry, directory listing, or third-party article has wrong information, fix it at the source
