What it means
AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated summary boxes that appear above the traditional ten blue links for around 30% of US queries and a growing share of Australian queries in 2026. The overview pulls from multiple web pages and synthesizes a direct answer, then links to the source pages.
They were previously called Search Generative Experience (SGE) during the 2023 preview period. The product launched as AI Overviews in May 2024.
Why it matters
When AI Overviews appear, click-through rates to organic results below them drop by 30 to 60% on average. Even when you rank #1, an AI Overview above your listing can take the click before the user scrolls. The only way to recover that visibility is to be one of the cited sources inside the overview itself.
For Australian service businesses, AI Overviews now appear on a meaningful share of high-intent queries like "best plumber in [suburb]" and "how much does a website cost in Australia."
How it's used
To be cited inside AI Overviews, you need:
- Strong existing Google rankings (overviews tend to pull from page 1)
- Answer-shaped content that directly addresses the query
- Proper schema markup for context
- Topical depth across the broader subject area
- E-E-A-T signals - author credentials, trust badges, real citations
