Answer Engine Optimization

Also known as: AEO, Answer Engine Optimisation

Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring your website, content, and brand signals so that AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews cite your business by name when they answer user questions.

What it means

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the discipline of getting your business cited inside AI-generated answers. Where traditional SEO targets the ten blue links Google shows, AEO targets the synthesized answer at the top of ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews.

The unit of success is the citation. When a user asks an AI engine "best plumber in Melbourne" and the engine recommends three businesses by name, AEO is what gets you onto that list. Where classic SEO asks "how do I rank this page?", AEO asks "how do I get an AI to quote this page as the trusted source?"

You will also hear the near-synonyms GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) and AI SEO. In practice most people use the terms interchangeably, and the tactics are essentially shared.

Why it matters

AI search adoption has grown fast. ChatGPT alone handles over a billion queries a week in 2026, and a meaningful share of those queries are commercial: people asking the AI to recommend a service, a product, or a vendor. If the AI does not name your business, you are invisible to that demand even if you rank #1 on Google.

Answers also increasingly replace clicks. When an AI gives a complete answer with a couple of cited sources, many users never scroll to the classic results. And the conversion rate on AI-driven traffic is dramatically higher than regular organic traffic, because the user has been pre-qualified by the AI before clicking through.

For Australian service businesses, high-intent local questions ("best emergency plumber in Brisbane", "trusted web designer for tradies") are exactly the kind AI engines answer directly. If an engine recommends a competitor in your suburb, you lost a lead you never even saw.

The key mental shift: with AEO, your first reader is a machine. A language model has to be able to extract a clean, self-contained answer from your content and feel confident attributing it to you. If your best information is buried in a wall of text, the model cites whoever made the job easier.

How answer engines pick their sources

  1. They retrieve, then they read. Most engines pull candidate sources from a live search index, then read them to compose an answer. To be cited you first have to be retrievable, which is why SEO fundamentals still matter.
  2. They favour clear, extractable passages. Content that answers the question directly, in plain language, near a relevant heading, is easiest to quote with confidence.
  3. They lean on trust and consistency. An established brand, consistent details across the web, author expertise, and corroboration from reputable sources all weigh in.
  4. They reward structure they can parse. Schema markup, clean HTML, logical headings, lists, and tables make meaning machine-readable.
  5. They prefer recency and accuracy. Up-to-date, factually tight content is safer to cite than vague or dated material.

Put simply: answer engines cite content that is easy to find, easy to extract, and easy to trust. AEO is the work of making all three true at once.

The core levers

  • Answer-first content. Lead with the answer under every heading, then expand. Short paragraphs, lists, tables, crisp definitions - self-contained passages an AI can lift cleanly.
  • Structured data. FAQ, Article, LocalBusiness, and Organization schema turn ambiguous text into explicit machine-readable facts.
  • Entity and brand signals. Engines think in entities, not keywords. Consistent name, details, and expertise everywhere your brand appears lets a model verify who you are. See brand mentions.
  • Citability. Original data, named statistics with sources, and clear claims make passages quote-ready. Hedged, padded writing does the opposite.
  • llms.txt and crawler access. Guide AI systems to your best content and make sure GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot are not blocked.
  • E-E-A-T. Real author bios, first-hand experience, transparent business details, and credible external mentions tell engines your content is safe to quote.
  • Measurement. Track citation share - how often each engine names you across a stable panel of buyer questions - monthly.

How to start

  1. List the questions your customers actually ask AI ("best emergency plumber in Brisbane?", "how much does a small business website cost in Australia?").
  2. Answer them cleanly on your site: direct answer first, detail after, FAQ blocks on key pages.
  3. Add LocalBusiness, Organization, and FAQ schema.
  4. Make your business details consistent everywhere they appear online.
  5. Publish an llms.txt and confirm AI crawlers are not blocked.
  6. Strengthen E-E-A-T: real bios, real local experience, credible mentions.
  7. Measure citations, not just rankings - re-ask the same questions monthly and track who gets named.
