Citation Share

Also known as: AI Citation Share, Share of Citations

Citation share is the percentage of relevant AI prompts in which your business is cited by name. It is the AEO equivalent of share of voice in traditional marketing, and the leading indicator of whether your AI optimization work is paying off.

What it means

Citation share is calculated by running a fixed list of relevant prompts against an AI engine and counting how many of them mention your business. Twenty mentions out of thirty prompts is a 67% citation share for that engine.

Most AEO programs track citation share separately for each major engine (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews) because the engines behave differently and shift week to week.

Why it matters

Citation share is the cleanest leading indicator of AEO performance. Before clicks happen, before traffic spikes, before leads arrive, citation share moves first. A program that is working shows citation share rising before any downstream metric responds.

It also lets you measure relative performance versus competitors. By tracking who else gets cited for your category prompts, you build a clear picture of who is gaining and losing AI visibility in your market.

How it's used

To track citation share:

  • Build a fixed prompt panel of 20 to 30 queries that match how customers actually ask AI engines
  • Mix branded queries, category queries, and long-tail problem queries
  • Run the same panel monthly across all major AI engines
  • Record whether each prompt cited your business and what it said
  • Calculate the percentage and track trends over time
