What it means
Gemini is Google's flagship family of large language models, succeeding the earlier Bard product in early 2024. Gemini powers Google AI Overviews in search, the standalone Gemini chat app, AI features in Gmail and Docs, and increasingly the Pixel phone assistant.
When a user asks Gemini a question that needs current information, the model searches Google in real time and grounds the answer in those results.
Why it matters
Of all the major AI engines in 2026, Gemini is the most tightly coupled with traditional Google search. Strong Google rankings translate almost directly into Gemini citations. That makes Gemini the engine where existing SEO work pays the largest AEO dividend.
For Australian businesses already running solid SEO, Gemini citations often start showing up within weeks of a content push, faster than ChatGPT or Perplexity.
How it's used
To win Gemini citations:
- Rank well in Google for the queries customers ask
- Make sure Google-Extended is not blocked (this is the crawler Gemini uses for grounding)
- Use Knowledge Graph-friendly schema (Organization, LocalBusiness, Service)
- Build E-E-A-T signals - author bios, real reviews, trust badges
- Maintain accurate Google Business Profile data for local citations
