Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): What It Is and How to Do It (2026)

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your business quoted and recommended inside AI answers. We checked 104 live Google searches and 8 AI answers about AEO to show which sources answer engines cite, then built the checklist from that data.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of shaping your website and your reputation across the web so that AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Overviews quote you, cite you or recommend you when someone asks a question. On 26 October 2026 we pulled 104 live Google searches in the US. 91 of them (87.5%) showed an AI Overview, and the data recorded a featured snippet on none of them, even though featured snippets were the answer boxes AEO was first built to win.

This guide explains AEO, then shows what answer engines actually cite. We asked ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode to define AEO, recorded every source they used, and combined that with our study of 120 AI answers. The checklist is built from those results, with a free tool for each step.

Orkkid is an SEO and GEO agency for solar companies. We call this work GEO and treat AEO, GEO and AI SEO as one discipline. We sell it, so read this guide with that in mind.

TL;DR

  • On 26 October 2026, 91 of 104 live Google US searches (87.5%) showed an AI Overview, including all 24 searches about AI search itself, and the data recorded a featured snippet on none of the 104.
  • We asked ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode what answer engine optimization is. The 8 answers cited 23 different sites, HubSpot most often (in 4 answers), and they cited none of the 7 pages ranking on Google's page one for "answer engine optimization" (the video aside).
  • In our October 2026 study of 120 AI answers across five engines, industry review sites made up 39.6% of cited sources and business websites 16%.
  • AEO, GEO and AI SEO name the same work. DataForSEO estimates that US searches for "what is answer engine optimization" rose from 210 a month in October 2025 to 2,900 in September 2026.
  • The AEO checklist: let AI crawlers in, answer first, publish specific facts, mark up your FAQs, fix your third-party profiles, and track a prompt panel monthly.

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization is the work of making your content and your business easy for AI systems to find, trust and cite as the answer to a question. An answer engine is any tool that replies with a written answer instead of a list of links, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and voice assistants.

Definition: Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your website, your facts and your presence on third-party sites so that AI answer engines select your business as the source they quote or the company they recommend.

The term is older than ChatGPT. It started in the era of featured snippets and voice search, and the goal stayed the same as answers moved into AI: be the source the machine trusts enough to repeat.

In practice, AEO covers four kinds of work:

  1. Access. AI crawlers can reach and read your pages.
  2. Answer-shaped content. Each page answers its question in the first sentence or two, with specific, checkable facts.
  3. Third-party proof. Review sites, directories, best-of lists and forums describe you accurately, because answer engines read those sources more than your own site.
  4. Measurement. You ask the engines your customers' questions every month and record whether you are named.

If you searched "what is AEO", the letters mean other things too. Google AI Mode answered "what is aeo" with the marketing meaning, then asked whether we meant American Eagle Outfitters stock, aerospace or government logistics.

AEO, GEO and AI SEO are one discipline with three names

AEO, GEO and AI SEO describe the same goal: getting your business named inside AI answers. AEO is the oldest label, GEO comes from a 2023 research paper titled "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", and AI SEO is the phrase many business owners type first. Wikipedia's entry treats GEO and AEO as the same thing, and Google AI Mode said the same when we asked.

Orkkid uses GEO as the service name, and our guide to what generative engine optimization is covers that definition and its history.

Interest in the AEO label is climbing quickly. Over the 12 months to September 2026, "answer engine optimization" grew from 2,400 to 4,400 searches a month and matched "generative engine optimization" (4,400) for the first time in that period, while "ai seo" fell from 8,100 to 5,400.

What answer engines cite when people ask about answer engine optimization

When we asked answer engines to define AEO, they cited plain definition pages from well-known software companies and educators, and they skipped every page ranking on Google's page one for the term. An engine picks the clearest, most trusted statement of the answer it can find, and that page is often a different one from the page that ranks first. We recorded eight answers on 26 October 2026, all from the US.

Across the eight answers, the engines cited 23 different sites. 13 were software companies such as HubSpot, Salesforce, Semrush and Shopify, 5 were educators and publishers such as CXL, Coursera and Wikipedia, 4 were community platforms (Reddit, YouTube, Medium, LinkedIn) and 1 was Google's own documentation. The seven pages ranking on Google's page one for "answer engine optimization", led by the Content Marketing Institute and WhatConverts, were cited zero times.

Three patterns stand out. The snippets Google showed for cited pages such as CXL, Salesforce and Content Science Review each open with a one-sentence definition an engine can lift whole. The brands behind them are entities every engine already knows. And ChatGPT answered the plain question from memory and searched only when asked, so some answers come from what a model already learned about you, which builds up as many sites describe you the same way.

How answer engines choose their sources: data from 104 searches and 120 answers

Answer engines choose sources they can reach, understand and trust, and each engine weighs those signals differently.

Google's AI Overviews often cite pages outside the top 10. On the 24 searches about AI search itself (questions like "aeo vs seo", "llms.txt" and "how to rank in chatgpt"), the AI Overviews cited 71 source domains, and only 20 of them (28.2%) also ranked in the organic top 10 for the same search. On the 58 solar, moving, wedding and SEO tool searches, 63 of 106 cited domains (59.4%) also ranked in the top 10. In our separate study of 60 homeowner solar searches, AI Overviews appeared on 86.7% of them, and about a third of the sites they cited also ranked in the top 10 (solar AI Overviews study).

Forums and video carry real weight. Reddit ranked in the top 3 for 11 of the 24 AI-search questions, and those AI Overviews cited YouTube 9 times and Reddit 8 times, more than any other site.

Each engine reads a different mix, as our study of 120 AI answers about local businesses in eight cities showed.

EngineMost-cited source typeBusiness websites, share of sourcesBusinesses named per answer
ChatGPTIndustry review sites (39.8%)19.4%6.3
PerplexityIndustry review sites (46.7%)3.9%6.4
GeminiBusiness websites (32.7%)32.7%6.3
ClaudeIndustry review sites (46%)14.6%10.4
Google AI ModeGoogle's own pages (29.2%)6.3%4.9

Across all five engines, industry review sites made up 39.6% of cited sources, against 16% for business websites. When two engines answered the same question for the same city, their lists of recommended businesses overlapped by only 17% on average, and 79.4% of the businesses they recommended did not appear in Google's map top 20 for the same search.

Your own website is one input and the review sites in your industry are another, so AEO has to cover both and check each engine separately.

How to do answer engine optimization: the AEO checklist

Which technical signals matched AI recommendations

We checked 358 business websites from the 120-answer study: 94 that an AI recommended and 264 that it skipped. The gaps were smaller than most AEO advice suggests.

Signal on the websiteSites AI recommended (94)Sites AI skipped (264)
Any schema markup81.9%76.1%
LocalBusiness schema71.3%62.1%
FAQ schema13.8%9.5%
An llms.txt file29.8%28.8%
Blocks an AI crawler0%1.1%

Schema showed a modest lead and llms.txt almost none, which matches Google's guidance. Its page on optimizing for generative AI features says "Structured data isn't required for generative AI search, and there's no special schema.org markup you need to add," and that you do not need to create "AI text files" to appear. An llms.txt file takes ten minutes with our llms.txt generator, so add one if you like, and spend the real effort on steps 2, 3 and 5. Our answer engine optimization services page shows what each step involves when we run it for a client.

Answer engine optimization examples: before and after

The best answer engine optimization examples are small rewrites that turn a setup sentence into a sentence an engine can quote on its own. The patterns below come from our guide on how to write content AI will cite, and the business names are illustrations.

PatternBeforeAfter
Definitive opener"There are several things to consider when choosing a moving company.""The three things that matter most when choosing a moving company are licensing, insurance coverage and a written estimate."
Specific facts"Our service is fast and reliable.""Most moving estimates are sent within one business day, and we have completed over 800 moves since 2021."
Name the subject"They offer this in three packages.""Acme Moving offers this in three packages."
Entity statement"We help businesses grow.""Orkkid is an SEO and GEO agency for solar companies."
Definition boxA long intro before the definition"Citation share is the percentage of relevant AI prompts that mention your business by name."

Each "after" version names its subject, makes one claim and holds a fact that belongs to one business, so an engine can lift it without the paragraph around it.

Real AI answers show the payoff. In our 120-answer study, ChatGPT described a Charlotte solar installer this way: "Renu is based in Charlotte, has been around since 2010, and EnergySage lists it as an Elite Installer with a 4.7/5 rating from 294 reviews." The sentence credits its key facts to EnergySage, a third-party site, which shows where those facts need to be published as well as on your own pages.

How to measure answer engine optimization

Measure answer engine optimization by running a fixed set of customer questions through each AI engine every month and recording how often your business is named. That percentage is your citation share, and the trend matters more than any single month because AI answers change between runs.

  1. Build a prompt panel. Write 20 to 30 questions your customers actually ask, such as "best solar installer in Tampa" or "how much does a battery backup cost". The prompt panel generator drafts one from your services and cities.
  2. Run it in each engine. The five engines reached different shortlists in our study, so one engine tells you little about the others.
  3. Record three things: whether you were named, which sources were cited, and which competitors appeared.
  4. Check Google's own data. Google says that to measure performance in its AI features, site owners should "use the Generative AI performance report in Search Console."
  5. Compare month to month, and give each change four to eight weeks before you judge it.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) vs SEO in short

AEO and SEO share the same foundations and aim at different outcomes. SEO works to rank your pages in the list of links, and AEO works to get your business quoted or recommended inside the answer. Google says SEO best practices "continue to be relevant because our generative AI features on Google Search are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems," so AEO builds on top of SEO.

Main sourcesYour own pagesYour pages plus review sites, lists and forums
How you measureRankings, clicks, trafficCitation share across a prompt panel

Is AEO SEO by another name?

People who search "AEO SEO" usually want to know whether AEO is a new discipline or a relabel. The answer sits in between: crawlability, clear pages and authority are classic SEO, while third-party profiles, answer-first rewrites and prompt tracking are specific to AI answers. Our full GEO vs SEO vs AEO comparison covers the differences in detail.

When to hire an AEO agency

Hire an AEO agency when your customers already ask AI who to hire, your competitors are being named, and you have no one in-house to run the monthly testing and third-party work. If you have a strong website and time each month, the checklist above is enough to start on your own.

Ask any agency three questions: which prompt panel they will track, which third-party sites in your industry they will work on (review sites carried 39.6% of citations in our study), and how they report citation share by engine. Our guide on how to choose a GEO agency lists the full set of questions, and since Orkkid sells this service, weigh our advice accordingly.

How we got this data

  • SERP pull (26 October 2026): 104 live Google US desktop searches through the DataForSEO organic live API, covering solar, moving and wedding marketing, SEO tools, and AEO, GEO and AI search terms. We recorded SERP features, the organic top 10 and the domains each AI Overview cited, grouped into 24 AI-search questions, 22 AI-search service and tool searches, and 58 other searches.
  • Live answer test (26 October 2026): we asked ChatGPT (gpt-5.5, web search on) and Perplexity (sonar-pro) "What is answer engine optimization?" through the DataForSEO AI Optimization API, repeated the ChatGPT prompt with "search the web and cite your sources", and ran Google AI Mode for three queries. Two AI Overview records came from the SERP pull. The eight answers cost about $0.14.
  • AI Recommendation Study (October 2026): 120 answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Mode to "Who is the best {business} in {city}? Give me your top picks" for moving companies, wedding photographers and solar installers in eight cities, matched against the Google Maps top 20, plus a check of 358 business websites.
  • Search demand: DataForSEO estimates of US monthly searches (Google Ads data, with DataForSEO Labs for "answer engine optimization aeo" and "ai seo"), October 2025 to September 2026.
  • Limits: every answer is a single run, so it is a snapshot. Eight answers is a small sample, so treat the source counts as a pattern to test on your own questions. Website signals show association with being recommended and cannot prove cause.

FAQ

What is AEO vs SEO?

AEO and SEO aim at different places in search. SEO works to rank your pages in the list of links on Google and Bing, and AEO works to get your business quoted or recommended inside the answer an AI engine writes. They share most foundations, including crawlable pages, clear content and authority, and AEO adds third-party profiles, answer-first writing and monthly prompt tracking.

What is AEO in AI?

In AI, AEO means answer engine optimization: making your content and your business easy for assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Mode to find, trust and cite. When we asked Google AI Mode "what is aeo" on 26 October 2026, it gave this definition and said the same work is also called GEO or AIO.

What does the abbreviation AEO stand for?

In marketing and search, AEO stands for answer engine optimization. The same letters have other meanings, including the stock ticker of the clothing retailer American Eagle Outfitters, which is why Google AI Mode asked whether we meant the marketing term, the stock, aerospace or government logistics when we searched "what is aeo".

What is an AEO agency?

An AEO agency is a marketing agency that works to get its clients cited and recommended inside AI answers. The work usually combines technical fixes, answer-first content, third-party profiles and monthly prompt tracking. Many agencies sell the same service as GEO or AI SEO. Orkkid is an SEO and GEO agency for solar companies. We also run SEO and GEO programs for moving companies and wedding vendors.

Is SEO dead or evolving in 2026?

SEO is evolving, and it still feeds AI answers. Google says SEO best practices continue to be relevant because its AI features are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems. In our study of 60 homeowner solar searches, about a third of the sites AI Overviews cited also ranked in the organic top 10, so strong rankings remain one route into the answer.
