Moving company SEO now has to win three places at once: Google search, the Google Maps pack and AI answers. We matched 40 AI answers against 160 Google Maps movers in 8 cities. Here are the review counts, keywords, site signals and timeline that get a mover named.
Moving company SEO is the work that makes your company the one a customer finds on Google, sees in the Maps pack and hears named when they ask ChatGPT for a mover. In our October 2026 test of 40 AI answers across eight cities, 75% of the 164 movers the AIs recommended did not appear anywhere in the Google Maps top 20 for the same city. Ranking on the map and being recommended by AI have become two separate jobs, and this guide covers both.
Every number below comes from data we collected: AI answers from five engines, 160 Google Maps listings and their websites, and DataForSEO search volumes for the queries your customers type. Orkkid is an SEO and GEO agency for solar companies. We also run SEO and GEO programs for moving companies and wedding vendors, so read this with that in mind.
TL;DR
- In our October 2026 study of 40 AI answers in eight cities, 75% of the 164 movers AI recommended were missing from the Google Maps top 20 for that city.
- Movers with 1,000 or more Google reviews were named by at least one AI 65.2% of the time, against 10.3% for movers with fewer than 50. The median named mover had 698 reviews, and the median mover AI skipped had 112.
- The AIs read moving review sites first: moveBuddha appeared in 47.5% of answers, FreightWaves in 42.5% and ConsumerAffairs in 35%.
- In 23 of the 30 US answers, the AI told the customer to check the mover's USDOT number or state license before booking, so that information belongs on your website.
- DataForSEO estimates 301,000 monthly US searches for "movers near me" and $78.16 per click for "long distance moving companies".
- Google says SEO usually takes four months to a year to pay off. Avant Garde Moving in New York earned 6,737 clicks and 2.56 million impressions in 16 months.

What moving company SEO means in 2026
Moving company SEO now covers three surfaces: the organic results, the Google Maps pack and AI answers. A customer can meet you on any of them before they request a quote.
Search engine optimization is still the base layer, because AI assistants build their answers from pages search engines have already indexed. Google showed an AI Overview on 9 of the 12 mover marketing searches we pulled on 26 October 2026, and every AI answer in our study cited at least one web source. What changed is the work beyond your own site. AI answers lean on review sites, rankings and forums, so a mover also needs to be described well on the pages the AI reads. That layer is called generative engine optimization (GEO), and our guide to GEO vs SEO explains how the two fit together.
So when someone asks whether SEO for movers is dead, the accurate answer is that it is evolving. Rankings still decide which pages AI can find, and reviews, listings and third-party mentions decide which movers it names.
The searches your customers type: a keyword map for movers
The keywords that bring in jobs are the ones customers type when they need a mover. We pulled US search volumes for 50 customer-side moving queries through DataForSEO's Google Ads data in October 2026.

| Customer search | Est. monthly US searches | Est. cost per click | Page that should rank |
|---|---|---|---|
| movers near me | 301,000 | $27.02 | Homepage and Google Business Profile |
| local movers | 60,500 | $23.42 | Local moving page |
| full service movers | 27,100 | $44.61 | Full-service moving page |
| long distance moving companies | 22,200 | $78.16 | Long-distance moving page |
| how much do movers cost | 14,800 | $11.61 | Moving cost guide |
| moving quote | 12,100 | $61.74 | Quote page |
| interstate movers | 6,600 | $71.61 | Interstate moving page |
| usdot number lookup | 6,600 | $5.06 | USDOT number on every page |
| certificate of insurance for movers | 480 | $15.72 | Building COI guide |
Long-distance and interstate searches cost advertisers $57 to $78 a click, two to three times the cost of local searches, so ranking organically for them saves the most ad spend. Customers also search the trust questions directly, with 6,600 USDOT lookups a month. City searches are large too: DataForSEO estimates 22,200 monthly searches for "movers austin" and 8,100 each for "movers denver" and "movers seattle".
If you are researching your own marketing, demand is much smaller. DataForSEO estimates 880 searches a month for "moving company seo" on a 12-month average, with 480 in a typical month and a $38.40 cost per click.
| Marketing search | Est. avg monthly searches | Typical month | Est. CPC |
|---|---|---|---|
| moving company seo / seo for movers | 880 | 480 | $38.40 |
| moving company marketing | 320 | 260 | $27.79 |
| moving company leads | 170 | 140 | $44.75 |
| moving company website design | 140 | 110 | $4.06 |
| local seo for movers | 110 | 90 | not reported |
| moving company seo services | 110 | 70 | not reported |
| moving company marketing ideas | 50 | 10 | not reported |
Google groups "moving company seo", "seo for movers" and "seo for moving companies" into one volume, so treat them as one topic.
How AI assistants pick movers: what our study found
AI assistants pick movers from review sites and rankings far more than from the Google Maps order. Of the 164 movers named across 40 answers, only 41 appeared in the Maps top 20 for their city, and 61.6% were named by just one of the five engines. The average overlap between two engines' shortlists for the same city was 19.1%.
| AI engine | Movers named per answer | Picks in the Maps top 20 | Most cited site |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 6.1 | 40.8% | movebuddha.com |
| Perplexity | 5.8 | 28.3% | movebuddha.com (tied) |
| Gemini | 6.9 | 27.3% | reddit.com |
| Claude | 10.3 | 22.0% | freightwaves.com (tied) |
| Google AI Mode | 5.0 | 45.0% | google.com |
Moving review sites made up 32.5% of everything the AIs cited, followed by media and publishers (14.6%), movers' own websites (12.1%) and directories such as Yelp and the BBB (11.2%). The domains in the most answers were movebuddha.com (19 of 40), freightwaves.com (17), consumeraffairs.com (14), reddit.com (12) and extraspace.com (12).
The AIs often repeated those sites' numbers. In Charlotte, Claude described Hornet Moving as having "a 4.9/5 Google rating across 5,491 reviews." Hornet Moving sat at position 19 in the Maps results we pulled, and four of the five AIs still named it. Einstein Moving Company in Austin sat at position 17 with 1,522 reviews and was also named by four engines. Your profiles on moveBuddha, ConsumerAffairs, Yelp and the BBB, and your place on the monthly "best movers in {city}" lists, now carry real weight. Our full AI recommendation study compares these results with solar and wedding businesses.

Review volume was the clearest signal in our moving data. AI named 28.1% of the 160 Maps listings, and the share climbed with review count.
| Google reviews | Listings | Named by at least one AI | Naming rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 50 | 39 | 4 | 10.3% |
| 50 to 99 | 16 | 0 | 0% |
| 100 to 199 | 24 | 5 | 20.8% |
| 200 to 499 | 29 | 8 | 27.6% |
| 500 to 999 | 29 | 13 | 44.8% |
| 1,000+ | 23 | 15 | 65.2% |
The bar for movers is high. The median listing in our sample had 201.5 reviews, and in the six US cities the median top-3 listing had 478.5. A practical target is 500 reviews, where the naming rate passed 40% in our sample.
Volume beat a perfect score. Listings rated exactly 5.0 were named 20.4% of the time, with a median of 95 reviews, while listings rated 4.8 to 4.99 were named 47.2% of the time, with a median of 435. Map position mattered less: 41.7% of movers in the Maps top 3 were named, against 19.6% for spots 4 to 10 and 30% for spots 11 to 20.
Send a direct review link by text the evening after each move, once the crew has gone. Our free Google review link generator builds the link and a QR code for the truck or the invoice. Ask every customer with the same message, because asking only happy customers is review gating, which Google's user-generated content policy prohibits along with paid or discounted reviews.
What AI tells customers to check before they hire a mover
AI assistants coach customers to verify a mover before booking. We read all 30 US answers and counted the checks they recommended.
| What the AI told the customer to check | US answers (of 30) |
|---|---|
| USDOT number, FMCSA registration or state license | 23 |
| A review count or star rating for a mover | 20 |
| Binding or not-to-exceed estimate | 19 |
| Insurance or valuation coverage | 17 |
| Written quotes from two or three movers | 15 |
| Better Business Bureau rating or complaints | 13 |
The AIs named specific regulators. Claude in Denver wrote: "Confirm the company's US DOT number with the FMCSA." Gemini sent Tampa customers to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and Claude in Seattle mentioned the Washington UTC license. Claude also questioned the review sites in four answers. In Seattle it said: "Some of these sites earn referral fees or are run by moving companies, so rankings can be biased."
That gives an honest mover an easy win. Put your USDOT and MC numbers, state license, insurance details and how your binding estimates work on your homepage and quote page in plain text. The FMCSA's Protect Your Move resource is where customers check interstate movers, so make sure your registered name matches your website and Google Business Profile.
Local SEO for movers: Google Business Profile and Maps
Local SEO for movers starts with a complete, accurate Google Business Profile, because that listing drives the Maps pack and feeds Google AI Mode, which took 45% of its picks from the Maps top 20. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence.

Google's tips to improve your local ranking cover the basics. Four details stood out in our data.
Choose the primary category that matches your core service
"Mover" was the primary category on 104 of the 160 listings, and AI named 33.7% of them. "Moving and storage service" appeared on 33 listings, and AI named 18.2%. The sample is small, so pick the category that describes your main service honestly and add storage as a secondary category if you offer it.
Keep your business name clean
Eight listings had a pipe-separated list of keywords in the business name, such as "Movers In Denver | Office Movers Denver", and only one of the eight was named by an AI. Google's guidelines for representing your business ask for your real-world name, and keyword stuffing can get a listing suspended.
Fill in services, service areas and photos
List every service you sell, from local and long-distance moves to packing, storage, piano and office moves. Add the cities you serve and real photos of your trucks and crews. Our guide to what ChatGPT reads from your Google Business Profile shows which fields AI answers quote.
Build city pages for the places you actually serve
A page per city or borough gives Google a page to rank for "movers {city}" and gives AI a page to cite. Fill each one with local facts such as building rules, parking permits and reviews from customers in that area. Avant Garde Moving's 56 location pages earned 216,002 impressions across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Westchester, Long Island and Connecticut.
SEO for moving companies: what the website needs
SEO for moving companies depends on one page per service, one page per city, clear trust details and structured data. We checked 113 reachable mover websites from the Maps top 20, and the movers AI named had their structured data in better order.
| Website signal | Named by AI (32 sites) | Not named (81 sites) |
|---|---|---|
| LocalBusiness schema of any type | 90.6% | 69.1% |
| MovingCompany schema type | 50.0% | 29.6% |
| sameAs links to profiles | 78.1% | 45.7% |
| FAQ schema | 28.1% | 19.8% |
| llms.txt file | 34.4% | 38.3% |
The biggest gap was sameAs links, which connect your website to your Google, Yelp, BBB and review site profiles so search engines and AI can confirm every listing belongs to the same company. Use the schema.org MovingCompany type with sameAs links and your service areas, and our free LocalBusiness schema generator writes the code. An llms.txt file made no visible difference.
Traffic also comes from the questions people research before choosing a mover. Avant Garde Moving's 72 blog guides on moving insurance, building certificates of insurance and closing timelines earned 1,952 clicks, and its NYC vs Connecticut cost guide alone earned 560 clicks from 140,473 impressions. If your site needs a rebuild first, see how we approach moving company website design.
When customers search for movers, and when to invest in SEO
Different moving searches peak at different times of year. In DataForSEO's estimates, "full service movers" jumped from 12,100 searches in June to 135,000 in July 2026, while "movers near me" peaked in January and February at 368,000.

Pages take months to rank, so a page published in July misses that July. Publish and strengthen your full-service, long-distance and city pages in winter and spring, and use the summer to collect reviews, when you complete the most moves.
Owners seem to plan their own marketing in the quiet months. Searches for "moving company seo" peaked at 2,400 in October 2025 and settled near 480 a month through 2026.

A realistic moving company SEO timeline
A realistic moving company SEO timeline runs four months to a year before results are steady. Google's guide to hiring an SEO says SEOs usually need "four months to a year" to implement improvements and see potential benefit.
| Phase | Work | What you can measure |
|---|---|---|
| Month 1 | Profile cleanup, schema, trust details, review link | Review requests sent |
| Months 2 to 4 | Service, long-distance and city pages | Pages indexed, first impressions |
| Months 4 to 8 | Decision guides, review site profiles, local links | Impressions rising, first non-brand clicks |
| Months 8 to 16 | Expand winning pages and cities | Quote requests by source, AI mentions |
Our client Avant Garde Moving, a premium New York City mover, shows what that looks like. Between 29 April 2025 and 28 August 2026 it earned 6,737 organic clicks and 2.56 million impressions across 237 pages. Its 36 service and money pages earned 954,574 impressions, and the homepage earned 2,646 clicks from 205,881 impressions. New York is saturated, so impressions arrived long before clicks.

How we got this data
AI answers. On 7 October 2026 we asked ChatGPT (gpt-5.5), Perplexity (sonar-pro), Gemini (gemini-3.8-flash) and Claude (claude-sonnet-5-5), all with web search on: "Who is the best moving company in {City}, {Region}? Give me your top picks." We used the DataForSEO AI Optimization API, plus Google AI Mode for "best moving company in {city}", in Denver, Austin, Phoenix, Charlotte, Seattle, Tampa, London and Toronto. That gave 40 answers naming 164 unique movers. The customer checks table covers the 30 US answers, counted by text search and reviewed by hand.
Google Maps and websites. For each city we pulled the Google Maps top 20 for "moving company" (160 listings) with rank, rating, review count and primary category, and matched listings to the AI answers by name. We checked the 153 listed websites for schema, sameAs links, llms.txt and robots.txt rules, and 113 were reachable.
Search demand. Volumes, monthly series and cost per click are DataForSEO Google Ads estimates for the US, pulled in October 2026. Google groups close variants, so some terms share one volume.
Limits. This is one run per prompt and engine, so it is a snapshot, and AI answers change daily. The samples are small, especially the 32 named websites, so the numbers show association rather than cause. Avant Garde Moving's figures come from its Google Search Console property and its own lead system, and the 2,833 lead entries cover all channels.
