What it means
Rich results are Google search listings that include enhanced visual elements beyond the standard title, URL, and meta description. Common rich results include star ratings, review counts, FAQs, breadcrumbs, product prices, recipe cards, video thumbnails, and event details.
Each rich result type is unlocked by a specific schema markup type. Review schema unlocks star ratings. FAQPage schema unlocks the expandable FAQ list. Product schema unlocks pricing.
Why it matters
Rich results take up more vertical space on the search engine results page, which improves visibility. They typically earn higher click-through rates than plain results - sometimes 30 to 50% higher for review-rich listings.
For AEO purposes, the schema that unlocks rich results also helps AI engines extract clean facts from your site. The same Review schema that wins star ratings in Google also tells ChatGPT what your average rating is.
How it's used
To qualify for rich results:
- Implement the appropriate schema markup type for each content kind
- Validate every page with the Google Rich Results Test
- Fix all errors and warnings in Google Search Console's Enhancements reports
- Be aware that Google has restricted some rich result types (FAQ, HowTo) to authority sites since 2023
Even when the visual rich result does not appear, the schema still feeds AI engines and the Knowledge Graph.
