How it works
The checker tokenises your copy in the browser, drops around 120 English stop words from the single-word table, then counts every two- and three-word phrase that is not made entirely of stop words. Density is occurrences per 100 words. Your target keyword is matched as a whole phrase, case-insensitive, and we also check whether it lands in the first 100 words, which matters more to Google and answer engines than the percentage. Switch on the HTML mode to paste a full page source and check the title, H1, H2s and meta description too.

Keyword Density Checker: common questions
What is a good keyword density?
There is no target number. Most well-ranking pages land between 0.5% and 2% for the main phrase naturally. Above 3% reads as stuffing. Placement matters more: the keyword in the title, H1, first 100 words and one subheading.
Does keyword density still matter for SEO?
Google stopped counting repetitions years ago. It matters as a sanity check: too low means the page might not be about the topic, too high reads badly. Use this tool to confirm coverage and catch accidental over-use, not to hit a percentage.
Why are stop words excluded?
Words like 'the', 'and' and 'to' dominate any frequency count and tell you nothing. We drop them from the single-word table but keep them inside two- and three-word phrases so 'plumber in Sydney' still counts.
